The Lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth — and it decides the whole layout of your chart. The 1st house starts with the Lagna; every other house follows in order.

WHAT IT IS

The sign on the horizon.

Stand at your birthplace at the exact moment you were born. Look east. The zodiac sign rising over the horizon — that’s your Lagna.

Why Lagna runs the chart

The Lagna is your 1st house. Every other house is counted from it. So your Lagna decides which planets are in which house — which means it decides what every planet does in your life.

Two people born the same day with different birth times will have completely different house layouts. That’s why Vedic astrology is so time-sensitive.

Lagna vs Sun vs Moon

Sun = ego, public self, vitality
Moon = mind, emotion, mother
Lagna = physical body, life path, personality

A complete Vedic reading needs all three. The Sun changes monthly, the Moon every 2.5 days, the Lagna every 2 hours — so the Lagna is the most personal.

Common questions

How accurate does my birth time need to be?

Within 5 minutes is ideal. If you’re within an hour, you’ll usually land on the right Lagna, but pada and divisional charts can be off.

What is ‘rectification’ if I don’t know my time?

An astrologer uses major life events (marriage date, accident, job change) to back-calculate your birth time. Tara can do a rough rectification — just chat with her.

Why is the Lagna so much bigger a deal in Vedic than Western?

Because the Vedic system uses whole-sign houses tied to the Lagna. In Western astrology houses are calculated separately (Placidus, Koch, etc.) so the Ascendant is less foundational.

Does the Lagna ever change?

No — your birth Lagna is fixed for life. But you do enter different ‘sub-lords’ as your dasha progresses, which can feel like a shift in personality.
