WHY IT MATTERS

The Moon is the mind.

Your Sun sign is your ego; your Moon sign is your inner world. In Vedic tradition the Moon rules emotion, memory, mother, and the unconscious — which is why every rashifal you’ve ever read is based on it.

What it shapes

  • How you feel and process emotion
  • What makes you feel at home
  • Your relationship with your mother
  • Eating, sleeping, comfort patterns
  • The basis of your Vimshottari Dasha timeline

Moon sign vs Sun sign

The Sun stays in one sign for ~30 days. The Moon changes every 2.5 days. So while Western horoscopes use your Sun, Vedic horoscopes use the Moon — making them more nuanced and personal.

Knowing both: Sun = how you act publicly, Moon = what you feel privately.

HOW IT’S CALCULATED

Sidereal, not tropical.

Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac with Lahiri Ayanamsa, which lags ~23° behind the tropical zodiac used by Western astrology — so your Western Sun sign won’t match.

We use the Swiss Ephemeris (the same engine professional astrologers use) to find the Moon’s longitude at your exact birth moment, then subtract the Lahiri Ayanamsa to convert to sidereal coordinates. The resulting longitude is mapped to one of the 12 rashis.

The math is precise — but accuracy still depends on your birth time. Off by an hour and you could land in the wrong sign about 5% of the time.

Common questions

Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from Western?

Vedic uses the sidereal zodiac; Western uses the tropical zodiac. They drift apart by about 1° every 72 years. Right now Vedic is ~23° behind, which often shifts you back by one sign.

What if I don’t know my exact birth time?

The Moon moves about 13° per day. If you’re within a few hours, you’re likely in the right sign — except on the ~2 days/month when the Moon is changing signs. Use noon for a best-guess and ask Tara to check.

Does my Moon sign decide my whole life?

No. It’s one of three pillars (Sun, Moon, Lagna). Vedic readings use all three plus all 9 planets and the dasha timeline. The Moon is the most cited because it changes most and is most personal.

Is the Moon sign the same as Nakshatra?

Related but different. The 12 rashis are 30° slices; the 27 nakshatras are 13° 20′ slices. Your Nakshatra is a finer subdivision of your Moon sign.
