WHAT IS A NAKSHATRA

27 finer slices of the sky.

The Moon takes ~27.3 days to orbit Earth, so the ancient Vedic astronomers split its path into 27 equal mansions. Each spans 13°20′ and is ruled by one of the 9 planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu (3 nakshatras per planet).

What your Nakshatra decides

  • The lord of your first Mahadasha at birth
  • Your personality archetype (deva / manushya / rakshasa)
  • Marriage compatibility via Nakshatra Matching
  • The starting syllable for a baby’s name
  • Animal symbology, deity, and life-purpose hints

The 4 Padas

Each nakshatra is sub-divided into 4 padas (quarters) of 3°20′ each. That gives 27 × 4 = 108 padas total — the same 108 you’ll find on a mala. Your pada gives extra precision: same nakshatra, different pada = quite different personality.

Common questions

Why does Nakshatra matter more than Rashi in some readings?

Nakshatras give a finer-grained reading — 27 buckets vs 12. And the entire Vimshottari Dasha system (the most-used predictive system) is built off your birth nakshatra, not your sign.

What if I’m born close to a nakshatra boundary?

Then your birth time really matters. The Moon moves ~13° per day; nakshatras are 13°20′ wide. An hour can put you on the other side of a boundary.

What is ‘Sandhi’ and should I worry about it?

Sandhi means the junction between two nakshatras. Being born in the last/first few minutes is considered traditionally inauspicious and may call for a small puja — but most modern astrologers don’t make a big deal of it.

Can I use this for baby naming?

Yes — every pada has a set of starting syllables. Try our Baby Name by Nakshatra tool, it does the lookup automatically.
